Who Dat?

So tonight I went out for dinner and drinks at a bar called Sissy K's near Faneuil Hall. The place is okay. It's main draw being $1.50 Bud Lights. I was there to watch the Saints-Eagles game.

Allow me to say right now that I am a Saints fan. I have been since September of 1998, when I saw my first live NFL game at the Superdome. They lost to the Kansas City Chiefs 17-30, which I soon discovered was pretty normal for this team. But I was gleeful to watch them defeat the Eagles for the right to play in the NFC Championship for the first time in team history. My best friend Emily was at the game and we talked after the game. Her family is my second family and I'm quite excited about celebrating her 30th birthday coming up in May.

Now in Boston, the bars close around 1-1:30. And my brother hates the bar scene in Boston. I think it's really the bar scene around Faneuil Hall. There are ubiquitous lines and cover charges for no particular reason. These things you don't see in New York, unless there's a band or a special event. I guess the bus loads of white hats from this area don't mind standing in lines and paying 5 bucks just for the privilege of drinking piss beer. I'll pass, thanks.

I can sit at home and drink piss beer. Maybe I'll put a velvet rope up outside my door and start charging.

No, I'm not down in general. I'm more down on the bars in that area. I love drinking at bars and going out. It's just odd that I should pay a cover charge and stand in line for a normal bar. I mean really normal.

lol - yeah i hate when you have to pay a cover. Usually only the clubs in DC charge. Sucks how in Boston they charge you to watch a game.

In that area I like the Sevens on Charles, or even the Tap, right on Cambridge Street.

Tom, those bars are more Beacon Hill than Faneuil Hall.

Far as I'm concerned, if your brother's going out around Faneuil Hall, he deserves everything he gets. You don't want to be treated like a wanker, don't participate in such a wanky bar scene.

Not that I'm particularly keen on the "bar scene" in Boston, I guess. I am keen on the pub scene. As in, if your idea of a good time is to go to a pubby bar and shoot the shit with your friends over beers, Boston offers an embarrassment of riches, in my opinion.

They have Scarlet Lady on tap at the Kinsale on Cambridge Street. I don't know that this information is strictly germane to the discussion, but I'm just putting it out there.

Amen. Get out of Faneuil Hall. Why did you go there? Was the line too long at Applebys? Back Bay, Brighton, South Station all offer lots of places that are: A) open past 1 (and sometimes 2) B) have a better crowd, and c) have no covers.

oh yeah, my answer presupposed that faneuil hall is where douches go to drink beer and so i recommended best bars in adjacent areas.

Douches who probably went to BC, or the BU business school, and they pop their collars up.

Points well taken gents. I will no longer frequent these cesspools of maturity.

I'll just call y'all next time I get the urge and you can kick me in the nuts.

So you all are about to tell me that there is actually a place in Boston that does not cater itself to teh underage or college scene and does not have extensive lines?
?? If this place is true it should be called NYC.

Mr. Dooley's on Broad (I think they actually used to fund raise for the IRA in there), Matt Murphy's in Brookline, and for a good, vomit-on-the-floor, inspiration behind "Departed", hit JJ Foley's in the financial district (the other one is full of Northeastern riff-raff).

Oh, and last call at JJ Foley's is at 2am, though they, um, round up to the nearest half hour or so.
